New Mikuni HSR

With vastly more air flow than the HIF44 SU supplied in the Moss SUpercharger kit, the HSR 48 Mikuni was originally designed as an upgrade for Harley-Davidson motorcycles. It features a profiled needle, like and SU, and Tuneable jets, like a Weber, so tuning is much more straightforward. It also features an accelerator pump, which makes a huge difference with the blower. Unfortunately, the pump is too small for use on the MG engine, so I modify the fuel bowl to have a larger pump shot. The advantage is much for flow capacity to keep on going after the SU would run out of air. The drawback is that you need to drive it like a motorcycle. Stomping the pedal to the floor under load will kill the vacuum signal, so you must roll into the power as you need it. Slower pedal = going faster!

After installing the factory bitumen-based sound deadener on the floors, we continued with foil-backed sound absorber throughout the entire car, anywhere there is a mostly-flat panel. I like the foil-backed deadener because it accepts adhesive very well. Deadener without foil often has strange reactions to the solvents in adhesives, either going soft, sticky, or dissolving. The foil prevents this, and also adds a small amount of heat insulation as well.

We were able to locate a partially-restored shell up in Victoria, BC. A small amount of damage in the right rear prompted us to replace the rear corner and lower valence with panels salvaged from the original G-ster shell. I was able to provide a left front fender out of stock, and we purchased a new panel for the right. Here is the new body in epoxy primer, ready for final bodywork.

Power Plant, '07

The balanced, over-bored engine has been fitted with low-compression pistons and an early camshaft, to match the increased pressure of the Moss supercharger. Fitment of a high-boost pulley brings boost pressure up to 6.5 lbs. An aluminum cylinder head keeps the chambers cool.

The distributor is an early-production 123 Ignition unit. An MSD Boost Timing Master retards advance under boost to protect from pre-ignition.

Other daily-driver modifications include relay circuits for the fan blower and headlamps and a SmartScreen wiper Module.

Do forgive the general dustiness of the engine. Eric has over 50,000 miles on the G-Ster since the restoration. I think we can cut him some slack!

Most everything has been pulled and the majority of the bad paint has been removed. Look carefully, and you can see the factory primer and paint, and then two additional coats of paint still clinging in a couple of spots. The adhesion on these was so bad, you could scrape it off with your fingernail in places. Once we got down to the factory paint, we could stop, since it was still well-attached.
